Book: Stephen Speight: Tramp

Another reader by Stephen Speight ("Moving to Marlborough"). I don't own it and I haven't found any pics online for many years. This is from a 2007 backup. Showing that the Tramp isn't an old man as one might think but a teen boy. And it's obvioiusly about a music band.

Easy Stage reader grades 9/10, previously they called it stage 5 (for 5 years of English).

Published in 1990 and was also available on audio cassette and maybe vinyl (hence echo). Obviously not made into a movie. I can't say more about the contents.

Issues 2

Contrary to the tool collections of Issues 1, I just have the red teacher's book (cover is text only) which is about all the 5 separate student's books. 1979, grade 9. Very long intro (concept info and overview), Also see Issues 1. The audio recordings were not just broadcasted by Radio Bremen but also recorded by them (and released by FWU). Plots:

-Booze (teen and adult alcoholism, incl 4 cases, 4 interviews (1 doctor) and 1 bio, survey, newspaper report)
-The Camberwell Case (crime at drug store, picture story, reports, questionings, prejudice, map, role play)
-Holiday Industry (holiday planning for England, radio interviews, ads, sales dialogues, maps, surveys) Blackpool and 3 Scottish Ski places incl. Granton-on-Spey
-Horror (noises ?, pics, newspaper, Vampire comic, Vampire info, short story MR James: The Ash Tree, Nightmares, write a play)
-Visions of Freedom (historical US slavery) dialogues, literature, Uncle Tom's Cabin, Adam Starr's Journal, song Go Down Moses, Nat's sermon (Nat Turner), photos.

No illustrations in the teacher's book, just many boxes like in Issues I. Instructions are a mix of German and English texts. Much more advanced like Issues 1 (grade 8).

Update: Issues

I was curious and I bought the students book 1 of Issues 1 (1976) and the teacher book (Lehrerhandreichungen) of Issues 2 (1979). As assumed, there are no movies, but at least some audio recordings (by FWU on audio reels and cassettes) which have been recorded and broadcasted on radio (Schulfunk) by Radio Bremen. These kits (Baukästen) were collections of materials to be used at schools. Some stories are based on other books and maybe some turned into movies, or could be.

There were also workbooks for students. The student's book of Issues 1 has 38 pages (A4), the teacher book 64 including 25 pages of concept info and overview and no illustrations beside these boxes. Issues 2 has 5 deeper stories. More about that in a separate post.

The contents of the workbooks (dark grey) are included in the student book as well just smaller.

The cover story in 10 short scenes is about a holiday camp in Denmark. Main character is 14 yo Caroline Redcliffe from Canterbury with at least 2 (younger ?) brothers. She met a Danish boy. Also about 14 yo Roland Schmidt from Frankfurt. Some very short plots, shop, disco etc. Few simple illustrations and multiple choice tasks.

The picture story is a comic of another boy+girl, 6 boxes.

Then there's a short story (Farewell to the Soldiers), set in 1812 about a teen romance, 4 pages, also on audio.

Finally 4 pop songs by teen Darren Burn with lyrics and simple illustrations and then vocabulary.

In total rather poor (nowadays) and just like school books.

Tiny Books - 1978 (audio) Book series, publisher Gjellerup

This is about the 1978 Swedish book series Tiny Books by publisher Gjellerup. Books have 15 pages and are illustrated. Mainly detective stories, aimed at ~12-14 yo. The books were also published as audiobooks on cassette, ~14-18 minutes for 2 stories, combined with "og". ISBN for the print books. I found this during searching more from Dennis Gotobed. Currently, I haven't found any cover photos. Books are not tiny (22 cm, but thin). Different illustrators like Mats Andersson, Måd Olsson, etc. Some details on Worldcat. Plots (in Danish) at litteratursiden.dk

Tiny Books 1: Joan Tate: Sandy's Trumpet, 9788713023646

Tiny Books 2: Joan Tate: Dirty Dan,  9788713023660

Tiny Books 3: Joan Tate: Zena, 9788713023684

Tiny Books 7: Michael Knight: Mars Man One,  9788713024339

Tiny Books 8: Michael Knight: A Bob A Job, 9788713024353

There's also an earlier, unrelated Tiny Books series, probably not Swedish. Both Joan Tate and Dennis Gotobed also wrote "Minibooks", like  "New Hallo Everybody". Tate also wrote full books and translations.

Let's Learn English: Bob and Jane

This is a 2 part 1966 English course for schools (6 graders) by German publisher Crüwell with books, vinyl, audio tapes, 13 drill tapes for language labs and sheets. Sheets in 1974. The 7" record singles running at 33 rpm and have a light green cover. 2 records for each part, so 4 in total. I think some more for teachers.

Book authors are Hans Franzen, Helmut Heuer, Hilde Krüger and Clemens Radau. Illustrations (full page in color) by Ekkehard Geister. I think the plot is about adventures/everyday's situtations of Bob and Jane, probably siblings, like at a zoo.

"Let's Learn English" is a 5 part school book series. Parts 1+2 are Bob and Jane I+II, part 3 is "Welcome to London" with an additional reader "The Bridge" by Stephen Speight. Part 4 is "Welcome to Britain - Welcome to America" with readers The Bridge + The Matchbox. Part 5 is "Advanced Course" with readers The Bridge, The Matchbox and "You" also co-authored by Speight.

I found some samples of the books, but haven't heard the audios. So not sure if spoken by grown-ups or kids.

Book: Stephen Speight: The Gang (exclusive)

Another reader, this time an early one (1974) from Stephen Speight, MA (Oxon).
42 pages incl. 3 pages vocabulary, 4 pages reading comprehension/test, 22 chapters. Illustrations by Ronald Knierum, advisor Clemens Radau. Grades 6-7.
I previously haven't found any details, no TOC and no cover image. I feared that the gang might be grown-ups or older teens.

The gang is Fatty (Edward), Big Chief, girl Doll and Littl'un (with squeaky voice) from left. The plot is about a gang of little kids in need of money for a holiday trip, but had bad luck with their jobs. After hard work, they finally got money with the 4th plan, making a fair. But it's still not enough.

Similar/related books (blue green cover) The Bridge, The Pier, The Matchbox.

    1. Meet the Gang (5 lines).
    2. The great plan - They decided to get jobs for holiday
    3. The list - 6 ideas of jobs, incl. a sponsored walk
    4. How many sponsors? - All have few sponsors. Littl'un has 325 (kids of school)
    5. The walk - hard work, feet hurt
    6. How much money? - counting money
    7. The next plan - everyone got a job, income is shown on a paper thermometer
    8. Big Chief's job - he made a bird-table but ruined plants (so no money)
    9. Fatty's job - he repaired a door bell, but ruined a table with a leaking battery
    10. Doll's job - babysitting, but broke a vase
    11. Littl'un's job - The only one earned money, 1 pound for cleaning a cowshed. But his mom accidentally burnt the money.
    12. The third plan - They sang Christmas songs in October at doors but people don't like it
    13. Carol singing -  Same in December and they made money but a policeman took it
    14. The fourth plan - They plan a fair with baking cakes, selling toys and a Robin Hood game
    15. All the fun of the fair - On Easter holidays the fair starts (brief chapter)
    16. At the Robin Hood stall - Shooting with arrows at bottles. A man hit several bottles with one arrow, so Big Chief moved the bottles apart.
    17. At the cake stall - guessing the weight of a cake
    18. At the toy stall - Fatty couldn't sell toys first
    19. At the second-hand stall - Littl'un had more luck selling antiques
    20. Who wins the cake? - Mr. Jamieson won the cake but nobody knows him (it was Littl'un). All visitors left, as there wasn't a tea stall. Doll's mom brought tea.
    21. Rich at last? - Counting the money
    22. See Britain by bus - At the travel agency (pic below) they want to book a holiday. They had 16 pounds. Only one member could travel to Spain for a week with that. As they worked hard they all want at least 2 weeks. So they decide to all make a bus tour to London.

The Ballad of the Sad Cafe

Next to the 1991 movie starring Vanessa Redgrave (pictured as strict main character), there's also a reader in the Echo English Readers series by publisher Klett in 1981. Level d (difficult, so for grades ~11-13), text and study aids. The original novel by Carson McCullers was published in 1951. Romance set in 1930s Georgia.

95 pages edited and annotated by Tobias Hergt. Yellow cover.

I think for the echo series, there are also audio tapes (and maybe vinyl) available. Also sheets by Willi Real. In 1963 there was also a stage play.

I haven't read the book, yet.

Scout - Baukästen für den Englischunterricht

Another Baukasten (tool box), mainly book series published in 1984 by Langenscheidt-Longman. First one was Issues (1976). Contents can be found on dnb.de. Authors: Gabriela Apel-Schurig, Angelika Oberwinter, Cornelia Renner, Manfred Schurig, H.J. Hoss. ~48-56 pages each. Obviously mainly example sentences with some illustrations. Book 8 also has songs. Books 7-9 are also about culture. Book 9 was published in 1986.  ~10 chapters each. Also 2 teacher books ~96 pages with handouts (units 1-4+5-9). Maybe some more additional material (eg audio like in Issues)? Book 9 is also about exchange students and London. Sample: 9.6 What to visit in London. 9.8 How to use the subway in London. 9.10 How English people live.

Book: Stephen Speight: The Computer Virus

Another reader by Stephen Speight (1992, Klett, 40 pages with illustrations, English Readers series, Early stage 6). This one is aimed at younger kids, obviously 6th grade and is also available on audio cassette (I haven't heard that). Few questions, almost no vocabulary.

Detective, sabotage plot about 2 competing teams of school newspaper reporters. Again, the main character is a girl. Fun, timeless plot with a happy ending, not involving pregnant teens or similar, but so fewer stuff for discussion. Timeless (replace diskette by USB stick or computer with cell phone and app/SMS). A bit unrealistic. But one of the best of that author (by now).

A kid of one team breaks in the house of the competing team, putting a virus on their computer (by just leaving a diskette in the drive for some seconds (without typing anything)). The computer is defective and playing a game and has to be tricked (sounds a bit like the 1983 movie WarGames). Schoolsell is the name of the paper, then renamed to Bargain Bazaar. Advertiser is the oppenent's paper.

    SCHOOLSELL good -

    BARGAIN BAZAAR better

    At the ADVERTISER

    Murderer - what murderer?

    It's a virus

    The detectives

Book: Stephen Speight: The au pair (exclusive)

This is an exclusive review of "The au pair" by Stephen Speight. It's a thin 1979 "reader" (German: Lesebuch or Zusatzlesestoff) from Schroedel, 48 pages including vocabulary, questions, newspaper snippets and some few, large illustrations by Gunnar Schmidt. Part of series "A". Probably not made into a TV series (however there's a German au pair Helga in Speak Out.) The readers are for "additional reading" = optional use with the regular school books "Let's Learn English" I haven't found any infos about the early readers online.

    1. Meet the Family
German Girl Petra, ~18 yo from Essen (pictured on cover, photo by Lord Snowdon) going to Oxford by train visiting the Jenkins' as au pair girl. Host dad picked her up, then introduction and dining with host mom.
    2. Keep her away from the river...
Petra going out with the 3 yo toddler girl in a buggy near the river. She rescued a man falling from a boat into the river. The toddler rolled into the river as well.
    3. A free afternoon
Coming home late from a pub, when washing up the dishes, she met Mark (woke him up), the Jenkins' son, about her age.
    4. The Party
Petra and other teens having a party. Mark tried to kiss her but she didn't want that.
    5. The runaway
Mark bought a white dress for her. She hesitated and wanted him to return it but tried it on upstairs. In the mirror she liked it and went down to him. He invited her to a party, but she didn't want to. She ran upstairs, looked the door, but he broke it open and then she ran away.
    6. London
She hitchhiked to London and later slept at a hostel. Her money was stolen. She befriends with a girl.
    7. Happy Campers?
She joined Jackie working hard at a holiday camp as waitresses. She befriends with a young boy (Dennis aka Snotty) and bought him cigarettes. They are cought by the dad of the boy (see illustration) and she's fired. She felt sick and is pregnant.
    8. The sons of gentlemen
She hitchhiked to Mark's school near Wales and told him during sports that she'll have a baby from him.
    9. An ending - or a beginning
In Germany, her parents reactions differed. Mark came for a visit. Both have new jobs. Open end. But probably they'll marry.

Level is not mentioned. 9th grade, especially with that plot. Obviously a typical plot from this author. In "The Runaway" there's also a pregnant girl who ran away. In the TV series "Moving to Marlborough" there's also a teen girl who didn't like a boy (not pregnant and runaway is the teen brother). Interesting cover photo. The girl looks androgynous and could be a 70s boy. The sudden pregnacy is not explained as previously it always says that she didn't like him and no intimacy was told.
The plot is weak, also the long chapter in the camp. At least there are some controversial points for discussion.

Plot (short): This is part of the Canadian, 1995 Goosebumps series, 74 episodes (s1e11+12) and not originally an educational series. Next to the original novel (#2), there's also a reader (Easy Readers) from Egmont. 112 pages. Great plot about a brother and sister and their dad experience with plants. Nice jeans of boy Casey.

I'm currently checking some readers. There a many readers, which are thin booklets, for different levels and subjects. Additional contents for regular school books. About half of them are based on classics (books, often made into movies, like Tom Sawer) but the others are just books. Plot is shortened, and there are illustrations, vocabulary and questions/exercises. For some of the readers there are also audio (tape,CD or audiobooks) and nowadays digital contents (web/tablets). I won't post regular movies, but maybe some exceptions. There's another reader from R.L. Stine from series Fear Street. The first readers I bought are from Stephen Speight.

    Books: SDZ-Informationen

SDZ stands for Sprachdidaktisches Zentrum (at Pädagogische Hochschule Freiburg im Breisgau), Germany. SDZ-Informationen is a series of 1980s and 1990s booklets for teachers about teaching English (and for other subjects). I have posts of most of the TV series, some others, I previously didn't know at all. Not sure if all of them are real TV series or just school books. Needs further inverstigations.

The publishing years are often several years later than the TV series. Google is a poor source. Next to worldcat, there is d-nb.info, where for some of these (and other) books, there's at least a table of contents.

    (American) Kernel Lessons (AKL)

I think this is just a book series, originally started in 1969 by Robert O'Neill published by Longman and at least with (audio) tapes for language labs (lab drills). Also abbreviated as AKL +the level (e.g. AKL: Intermediate). Later reissued like "Kernel One". "American Kernel Lessons" published in 1978.

One famous story is The Man Who Escaped (24 episodes, 1979). Another one is The Rainbow Project (1999 ?).

O'Neill, who died in 2014 was a famous ELT author with ~30 books. In 1970 he wrote English in Situations.

At least one book (other series) was also made in a series: The Lost Secret. There were also some co-authors.

Interseting series, but I have to do more research.

Book: Double Trouble, and videos, and the hard way to get infos

This is a list of the videos and books (additional material) of Double Trouble (1984) but this is typical for almost all other series. The early series sometime also had vinyl and audio cassettes.

I wanted to find more infos especially of this and one more series. Videos and books are often very rare (except for the series still running), especially of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, so infos, pics and even some episode titles can't be found online (easily).

I now found more infos and even screenshots, an update of the series coming soon.

Best next the videos is the workbook with 60 pages. Should be illustrated. Also infos in different magazines like Praxis Schulfernsehen.

    Availability: (poor)

Shops: I found a shop via a meta bookshop site, who claimed that they can order all of them including vids but it wasn't true. The only available (used) copy of the workbook is at a Turkish store, but they obviously only ship within Turkey.

Libraries: The only alternative. Germany: I only found video and books in just one library, but you can't loan it, only use it there and must be member of that library/university.

International libraries: Research is often hard, especially with simple titles like Bridges. Even when having ISBN and authors (here: Lonergan (Jack), Neuman (Jocelyn) and Garpebring (Eskil)). Worlcat shows ~15 libraries, but half of them are different books (same ISBN) and the other half don't have them, although stated. One library in Hungary have video and books but don't borrow them.

Magazines: By coincidence, I read, that some teacher's stuff continued to be published in magazines, most notably Praxis Schulfernsehen. There are also other magazines, but most aren't digitized, so you don't know the exact issue, title and author. And there is 70s stuff in 90s issues.

Research: Best research for this subject is fachportal-paedagogik, digibib and the OPAC (meta) servers (for magazines) like bonnus-ulb.uni-bonn. Some also include international libaries and even shops.

Some infos are also included in other, general books. But often you can't find contents in vintage books online. Google Books showing less and less. I haven't tried Scholar. Another way would be to ask teachers. At most forums someone has to register (and teachers only).
